Refining Characteristics

Detail
Tantawan is a high quality, light, sweet, paraffinic crude. It is low in nitrogen, metals, carbon residue, and asphaltenes.

Naphtha
The heavy naphtha is good feed for ethylene crackers.

Middle Distillates
Tantawan contains a significant yield of kerosene which is suitable for the manufacture of jet fuel with a high smoke point (32mm). The jet fuel is sweet being low in mercaptan sulfur (1 ppm), has a low acid content (0.03 mg KOH/g), and does not need any treatment. If the mid-distillate is used for manufacture of diesel, the diesel will have an excellent cetane index of 62.

Vacuum Gas Oil
The VGO is paraffinic which makes it a good candidate as feed to an FCC. Due to Tantawan's low nitrogen (78 ppm/680 ppm) and sulfur (0.08 wt%/0.14 wt%) content respectively in the light and heavy vacuum gas oils, as well as its very paraffinic nature, the FCC will have excellent conversion.

Vacuum Residuum
The vacuum residuum in Tantawan has a low yield (5.1 vol%), as well as low sulfur, nitrogen, carbon residue (MCR), vanadium, and nickel. Due to these properties, some refiners will be able to feed the atmospheric residuum directly to an FCC. Also, the VR contains minimum fuel oil yield (5.6 vol%), requiring less cutter than other crude oils with similar properties.
